Electrocautery Plate Cable
Cauterization refers to a process in which a direct or alternating current passes through a conductive electrode, and heat is generated. This produced heat is used to create homeostasis or burn tissue. Plates are one of the components of the electrocautery system. These plates are connected to the electrocautery device by the cautery plate cable, which we will discuss below.
What is electrocautery?
Bleeding is one of the most critical challenges during surgery, and bleeding control is considered one of the most important issues for the surgical team.
Various methods are used to control bleeding depending on the location, amount, and severity of bleeding. One of the most widely used methods is the use of regulated electric current to burn and seal bleeding vessels. This method is known as electrocautery. The electrocautery device was introduced to the surgery world in 1324 by Bovie for hemostasis during rectal cancer surgery.
In this method, a device (generator) produces an electric current, and the intensity of the current can be adjusted according to the need during surgery. Then the current enters the patient’s body through an electrode for burning. After the process is done, it leaves the patient’s body through another electrode and returns to the device so as not to cause any problems in the patient’s body.
Advantages of the electrocautery method
Electrocautery by controlling and preventing bleeding, prevents the loss of the patient’s blood and provides the surgeon with a better view of the surgical site.
Uses of the electrocautery method
Electrocautery can be used for general surgery, including open surgery, gynecology, orthopedics, cardiology, otolaryngology, brain surgery, skin and cosmetic surgeries, etc.
Methods of using an electrocautery system
In addition to being used to control bleeding, the electrocautery system is also used to cut some tissues, such as subcutaneous tissue, fascia, and muscle. Therefore, this device will have two functions: one type of current to burn and control bleeding and another type to cut tissue.
The cauterization is performed in two ways, monopolar and bipolar the most used type is known as monopolar. In this method, the electric current is transferred to an electrode (mainly a cautery pen) through an interface and a wire and enters the tissue to make a cut or clot (bleeding control). The electrode burns the bleeding vessels and thus prevents the bleeding or helps to cut the tissue. Finally, the flow leaves the patient’s body through the cautery plate and the cautery plate cable.
The second method is used when bleeding is minor and close to sensitive points and tissues. This method is called bipolar electrocautery. In this method, a feeble electric current should be used so that the surrounding tissue is not damaged.
What is a Cautery Plate?
In the monopolar method, after cutting or coagulation of blood, the electric current returns to the device through an electrode so that it does not stay inside the body and does not cause burns. This electrode is called a cautery plate.
The disposable electrocautery plate is a multi-layered conductive plate whose contact with certain parts of the patient’s body causes the removal of current from the body. This plate is connected to the electrocautery device by the cautery plate cable. This plate in addition to the metal layer, must have a cover in contact with the body that prevents burns and conducts the current well.
Cautery plates can be single-edged or double-edged. In the single-edged type, metal layer is a one-piece. The current collects on its surface and finally exits (mainly supplied and used for older electrocautery devices).
Most new electrocautery devices have an added feature to provide more safety for current transfer. This is the ability to use two poles to exit the current from the body. Therefore, if one pole fails and does not work correctly, the other pole will transfer the current so that no damage is caused (The metal layer is two pieces).
Cautery Plate Cable
The disposable cautery plate is a soft and flexible plate connected to the device through a 3 or 5-meter-long cable called the cautery plate cable. At one end of this cable, there is a connector where the end of the cautery plate is placed inside and then locked. At the other end, there is a socket that connects to the device. This socket varies depending on the type and model of the device.
AJP Cautery Plate Cable
The cautery plate cable is one of the products that can be supplied by Asia Jarah Pishro company. This product is designed to be durable and long-lasting, and easy to use and clean.
Cables are produced from high-quality materials; As a result, they provide high power and have a long life. These connectors are available in two types:
- Martin for devices with European connectors
- Valleylab for devices with American connectors
Using these cables guarantees complete safety for the user and the patient because it is safe and easy to connect to the generator.
The cables are supplied in a non-sterile state and do not need to be sterile due to being outside the sterile environment. However, they should be cleaned and disinfected after each use.
Key features of AJP Cautery Plate Cable
- Two models for different device
- Suitable for all types of common electrocautery devices
- High strength
- Length: 3 meters
- Sterilizable by formalin tablets
Warnings regarding the use of cautery plate cable
To achieve greater safety and reduce burns caused by electrocautery, a guideline has been created by experts in this field. In the following, we refer to some of these instructions that are related to the cautery plate cable:
- The electrocautery cables should be placed away from the monitor cables.
- Make sure that the plate with the cautery plate cable has a firm and stable connection.
- The electrocautery device and its accessories should be reviewed before and after each operation so that the cables have proper insulation and connections, and the damaged items should be replaced or repaired.
- Since the cautery plate and its connection to the cable cannot be seen during the operation, if there is a problem, it usually remains hidden until the end of the process. This issue may cause burns in the patient’s body. Therefore, the quality, size, and installation of these parts will be very important.
