Leica Surgical Microscope Cover
The surgical microscope is one of the most essential instruments in the operating room. This device provides high‑magnification, high‑resolution images of fine anatomical structures during delicate procedures. However, sterilizing this device presents a major challenge. This process is often difficult, time‑consuming, costly, and may not even be possible in all healthcare facilities. To overcome this problem, surgical microscope covers are used to create a sterile barrier between the microscope and the surgical field. In this article, we introduce the Leica microscope cover and discuss its key features and benefits.

What Is a Surgical Microscope?
A surgical microscope is an optical instrument that uses a series of lenses to produce highly magnified, high‑resolution images of tiny anatomical structures. Many precise and delicate operations simply cannot be performed without it.
Surgical microscopes serve two main purposes:
- They enlarge areas where the surgeon’s direct view is limited.
- They provide a clearer, more detailed image of the surgical site, which allows the surgeon to see fine tissues and perform procedures with greater precision.
In the medical equipment market, surgical microscopes are available in two configurations: ceiling‑mounted and portable. Ceiling‑mounted models are generally more advanced and offer higher magnification than portable ones.
Older surgical microscopes were equipped with a single eyepiece, which allowed only the surgeon to view the operative field. Modern microscopes, however, may have two, three, or even four eyepieces, enabling other members of the surgical team to observe and assist.
In addition, many current microscope models are fitted with large monitors that can display the surgical field and record video of the procedure.

Uses of Surgical Microscopes
Surgical microscopes are used in various procedures, including neurosurgery, eye surgery, ENT surgery, and other specialties requiring fine dissection. They are particularly important in pediatric surgery due to the small size of anatomical structures.
Different Models of Surgical Microscopes in Iran
The most widely used and best‑selling brands of surgical microscopes in Iran are Zeiss and Leica, which are available in several different models on the market.
Because Zeiss and Leica microscopes adhere to international standards, you can find similar features across almost all of their models. One such feature is the diameter of the main lens, which is 65 mm in most Zeiss microscope models.
What Is a Leica Microscope Cover?
Any device used in the operating room that comes into close or direct contact with a patient must be sterilized. Disposable surgical instruments are therefore supplied in a sterile state.
However, large equipment such as surgical microscopes, surgical lights, C‑arm devices, as well as endoscopes, sensors, and probes, cannot be easily sterilized. Sterilization of these items is either impossible, difficult, time‑consuming, or requires specialized methods that are not available in all medical centers.
A practical solution is the use of sterile barrier covers (drapes). When placed over the equipment, these covers prevent contamination from reaching the surgical site and protect the patient during the operation.
Limitations of Reusable Covers
In the past, reusable covers were manufactured for this purpose. These were fabric covers sewn to fit each specific device. After each use, they required washing, disinfection, packaging, and sterilization.
These processes placed a significant burden on the Central Sterile Services Department (CSR) and consumed considerable time. When multiple surgeries are scheduled in a single day, the sterilization of reusable covers becomes costly and demands extensive equipment and labor.
Furthermore, fabric covers are not impermeable; moisture can penetrate them. During surgery, blood and other fluids from the operating site, or contact with the gloved hands of the surgical team, can seep into the fabric. Once this occurs, the cover is no longer sterile. This led to the development of disposable covers.

Why Is It Better to Use AJP Disposable Covers?
AJP disposable microscope covers are manufactured from soft, transparent, and impermeable plastic. They are sterilized with ethylene oxide gas and packaged under sterile conditions. These covers have none of the disadvantages associated with reusable covers. Their ease of use and impermeability are the main reasons medical staff prefer disposable covers.

Biodegradability of AJP Microscope Covers
Asia Jarah Pishro Co. has developed a formula for producing biodegradable and environmentally friendly microscope covers following an extended period of research and development.
This feature will soon be incorporated into all covers manufactured by the company, including those for light handles, laparoscopic cameras, C‑arm devices, and other equipment. The use of biodegradable plastics minimizes environmental pollution caused by plastic waste.
The company’s approach focuses on manufacturing operating room medical equipment using advanced techniques while reducing environmental impact, an area that has received limited attention in this country to date.
