Internal nasal splint
Surgeons use internal nasal splints or nasal silicone tampons to keep organs stable and to help repair bones and shape the nose in nasal surgery. The most common use of splints is in orthopedics, bone cracks, mild fractures, or after bone repair.
Types of nasal splints
There are two types of splints:
- External nasal splint: Surgeon usually use this type of splint in all nose surgeries to keep the bones stable and also to shape the nose after the surgery.
- In the past, plaster bandages were placed on top of each other in several layers. Then it was cut into the shape of the nose and moistened in warm water. After the surgery and dressing, it was placed on the nose to take the shape of the nose and dry it.
- With the advancement of technology in the production of polymer materials, a type of polymer called thermoplastic was produced, which changes its plasticity with temperature changes. These materials are used in the production of splints, including nasal splints, and gradually filled the place of plaster bandages.
- Internal nasal splint (Silicone tampon): Internal nasal splints are another type of nasal splints that are made of medical-grade silicone. Since they are placed inside the nose, it has a crescent shape. Also there is usually a groove all over the silicone tampon. In some cases, they are produced in the form of a flat plate with crescent-shaped edges.
The function of silicone nasal tampon
- to protect the middle nasal septum and the bones of the nasal wall during the recovery period
- controlling the bleeding by applying pressure on the skin and nasal mucosa
- to help to improve the internal structure of the nose and the wall at the same time.
Types of internal nasal splints
Nasal silicone tampon is produced and supplied in two models:
- Simple or flat silicone tampon: In this model, there are two similar pieces. Each one consists of a flat surface that has the shape of a nose. One side of these tampons is in the form of the middle nasal septum and the opposite side is in the form of the side wall of the nose. This model of tampons is usually used to keep the middle nasal septum stable.
- Nasal silicone tampon (With airway tube): A type of internal nasal splint made of silicone that has a channel that allows secretions in the nasal cavity to be directed outside and the airway remains open for breathing.
How to use a nasal silicone tampon?
- After finishing the surgery and removing the blood and secretions, the tampons are opened from the package, washed with physiological serum, and placed inside the nose.
- The narrower part of the silicone tampon is placed in the upper part of the nose, and the end, which is wider and has a hole embedded in it, is located in the lower part of the nose. Also, the flat part should be placed on the back and the round part should be placed on the front.
- In order to prevent the internal silicone splints from moving inside the nasal cavity and to make their evacuation easier, the surgical thread is passed through the holes at the end, and they are tied together after dressing. This action helps to fix the dressing, and prevent the threads from being loose and touching other parts and causing contamination.
Removing nasal silicone tampons
After the repair of the nasal walls and with the diagnosis of the surgeon, the area around the silicone tampon is moistened with a serum to remove the possible adhesion, and then the tampons are slowly removed.
Removal of plaster, nasal tape, and nasal suture usually does not cause discomfort. Some patients may experience minor discomfort when the splints are removed due to stretching of the skin. However, many patients experience pain relief after the splint is removed.

What are the purposes of using an internal splint in nose surgery?
- Fixing the nasal septum: The internal splint is a soft silicone piece that is used to fix the shape of the nose and stabilize the middle nasal septum after rhinoplasty.
- Reducing bleeding: Silicone tampons reduce bleeding by pressing on the nasal mucosa.
- The internal nasal splint causes the inner lining of the nose over the bone.
