Martin Surgical Light Handle Cover
Surgical lights are among the most critical equipment in the operating room. During a procedure, the surgeon or surgical team may need to adjust the light’s position or angle. This adjustment must be performed under sterile conditions, as any contact with a non‑sterile surface can compromise the sterile field. One effective solution is to use sterile covers for the light handles. These covers allow the surgical team to adjust the lights safely without breaking sterility. In this article, we introduce the Martin surgical light handle cover and discuss its features and benefits.

Features of Surgical Light
The primary feature of surgical lights is to produce illumination that mimics natural daylight, preventing color distortion and providing both natural and cool light. Because these lights are positioned close to the surgical site, the surgeon, and the surgical team, they must generate cold light that does not raise the ambient temperature. For this reason, specialized lamps are used in their construction.
Surgical lights include a control panel that focuses the light onto the operating area and allows the user to adjust the intensity.
Additionally, some surgical light models are equipped with heat‑absorbing filters to prevent the generated heat from causing discomfort to the patient or the surgeon.
Methods of Adjusting Surgical Lights
At the beginning of a surgical procedure, the surgeon and the surgical team wear sterile attire. Their hands, after disinfection, are covered with sterile gloves and must not touch any non‑sterile objects. To adjust the height and angle of the surgical light under these conditions, two methods are commonly used:
1-Adjustment by a Circulating Nurse
The first method for adjusting the surgical light involves a circulating nurse. This nurse works outside the sterile field but within the operating room, assisting the surgical team by adjusting devices and preparing the necessary equipment.
The circulating nurse is not sterile and must avoid any contact with sterile members of the surgical team. Any contact between a non‑sterile person or object and a sterile team member can lead to contamination of the surgical environment.
Even a minor collision, such as the nurse’s clothing touching a sterile team member, forces that individual to change into fresh sterile attire, thereby interrupting the surgical procedure.
2-Use of Sterile Accessories
To address the challenges described above, surgical light manufacturers have developed two main solutions: sterilizable handles and sterile disposable covers that fit over the handles.
As a result, the surgical light handle can either be detached and sterilized through a conventional sterilization process, or covered with a disposable sterile cover. Both methods allow the surgeon to adjust the light easily without relying on a circulating nurse.

Challenges of Light Handle Sterilization
Sterilizable handles also have certain disadvantages, including:
- High cost: These handles are expensive and impose a significant financial burden on medical centers.
- Lack of standardization: Different manufacturers produce handles with varying shapes and sizes, and each handle is typically designed to fit only its own brand of surgical light.
- Time‑consuming process: The complete cycle of washing, disinfection, drying, packaging, and sterilization requires a long period of time.
- Overall expense: Consequently, the preparation and sterilization steps are very costly.
To address these challenges, an alternative solution has been developed and implemented: the use of disposable surgical light handle covers.
What Is a Disposable Surgical Light Handle Cover?
In recent years, disposable sterile covers have been developed to improve the usability of surgical lights. These products are known as disposable surgical light handle covers.
These covers can be easily placed over the surgical light handle and acts as a protective layer. They prevent direct contact between the surgeon’s or surgical team’s hands and the non‑sterile parts of the handle. This helps maintain sterile conditions and allows the surgeon to adjust the light easily without worrying about contamination.

AJP Martin Surgical Light Handle Cover
Some surgical light manufacturers produce handles with larger than standard diameters. As a result, ordinary disposable covers do not fit these handles. Martin lights are among the most commonly used operating room lights in Iran and are widely available in medical centers.
Following recommendations from several healthcare facilities, we set out to address this issue. After extensive research and development, we modified our standard cover design to produce a disposable version specifically suited for Martin lights and similar devices.
Biodegradability: A Future Goal
A key objective in our production of medical covers is to incorporate biodegradable raw materials. This would allow the plastics used in manufacturing to return to nature completely (100% biodegradable), breaking down within a few years. Achieving this feature requires significant time and effort in design and production. We are actively working toward this goal, aiming not only to serve medical and hospital staff but also to protect the environment.
